He would live until 1597 where he died to natural causes. He was characterized for his care and labor intensive work to support native Brazilians come to Christ.
In his later years, he retired to the mission of Reritiba (now the city of Anchieta) in Espírito Santo, where he continued to teach and care for the indigenous people. He mastered the native Tupi language and wrote its first grammar, Arte de gramática da lingoa mais usada na costa do Brasil, making him the "Father of Brazilian Literature".
