Often times, they lost their homes and money. Rebecca Motte was a patriotic woman who lost her home and plantation to the control of the British. Francis Marion snuck a message to Rebecca Motte stating that in order to beat the redcoats, they would need to burn down her home and plantation. She gladly complied.

Loyalists in the American RevolutionLoyalists were in support of the king and wanted no independence from Britain. There were more loyalists in South Carolina than in any other colony besides New York. Most of the loyalists lived in the lowcountry. Loyalists were commonly known as "Tories". Andrew Deveaux is a notorious loyalist who founded the South Carolina loyalist militia known as the "Royal Foresters".
