  • BACKGROUND
  • I know exactly how we're gonna fix this. We need to turn into an empire so we can provide resources and markets for Japanese goods.
  • What are we going to do about this?! The depression is going to ruin us!!
  • INVASION 1, 1931
  • YES!!! MANCHURRIA IS MINE!! ONE STEP CLOSER TO BECOMING AN EMPIRE!
  • MANCHURRIA
  • CHINA APPEALS
  • WHAT SHOULD WE DO?!
  • China is in such state of anarchy that we have to invade in self-defence to maintain peace in the area!
  • Sincr 1900 Japans economy and population had been growing rapidlyand by the 1920s they were a major power and had a powerful millitary. The depression hit Japan badly as the USA and China put up trade barriers against them. Army leaders thought they had to create an empire in order for these problems to go away.
  • THE LEAGUE INVESTIGATES
  • Japan acted unlawfully! Return Manchurria to the Chinese ASAP!
  • In 1931 an accident in Manchurria gave them the perfect opportunity; the Japanese controlled the South Manchurrian Railway, so when chinese troops attacked it, they had the perfect excuse to invade and set up a government in Manchurria. The japanese were now in charge and had one more country for their empire
  • INVASION 2, 1933
  • China appealed to the league. The Japanese said that China was in a state of anarchy to the pont where they had to invade in self-defense to maintain peace. Japan was one of the leading countries of the LoFN, they didnt know what to do.
  • THE LEAGUE RESPONDS
  • In September 1932, a full year after the invasion, the League found out that Japan had acted unlawfully. Manchurria should be returned to the Chinese immediately.
  • In February 1933, the Japanese anounced that they only intended to invade more from China. They argued that it was necessary in self-defence. Japan resigned from the League on 27 March 1933, and the next week they invaded Jehol.
  • JEHOL, CHINA
  • The League was powerless. It discussed economic sanctions, but wthout the USA, Japans main trading partner, they would be meaningless. Britain seemed more interested in keeping a good relationship with Japan rather than applying sanctions. No one wanted to risk a war, onky the USA and the USSR could be powerful enough but they didn't beong to the League.
