In the beginning of the book both Vignes twins talk about ambitions and goals as kids. "Stella wanted to become a schoolteacher at Mallard High someday. But every time Desiree imagined her own future in Mallard, life carrying on as it always had, she felt something clawing at her throat. When she mentioned leaving, Stella never wanted to talk about it We can't leave Mama, she always said, and chastened, Desiree fell silent" (Bennett 11). This shows how Stella has always been a practical and calm person, even when thing seem unrealistic she always does the most ideal solution

After Desiree gets Stella the office job, she teases her by calling her "White Stella". She wanted Desiree to see how convincingly she played her role, but she was living a performance where there could be no audience" (Bennett 209). This shows how getting called this name upsets Stella due to her effort of doing this act for her family.

As Jude finally got to speak to Stella outside, Jude tries telling Stella she is the daughter of Desiree but Stella wishes to not believe it. "It's too much, said said. I can't go back through that door. It's another life, you understand?" (Bennett 280). Here the quote shows how Stella continuously says "another life" showing readers how living a double life was a necessity that she doesn't want to talk about.
