  • Lise was born on 7th November 1878 in Vienna.Her name is actually Elise Meitner and she was the third of eight children from a liberal Jewish family. Her father ( Philipp Meitner) was one of the first lawyers with a Jewish origin.

  • Lise Meitner completed her first training as a French teacher. She was one of the first women allowed to study at the University of Vienna. Lise Meitner focused on physics after her first year on the university.

  • Together with Otto Hahn and his assistant Fritz Strasseman, they had split an atomic nucleus, the fundamental mechanism responsible for nuclear energy but also for nuclear weapons for the first time. In January 1939, Meitner and Otto Frisch provided the first physical theoretical explanation of nuclear fission. She didn't get a Nobel Prize but Otto Hahn did.
  • She was granted a stay in the United States and was named ' Woman of the Year' in 1945
  • In 1947 Lise Meitner was appointed as a professor at Stockholm University. She got assistants and a decent income.
