  • Starting at the age of 15 Mitsuru worked as a cook boy for 7 years while only getting paid half of what his dad’s crew received since they thought they could take advantage of him since he was young
  • The Story of Mitsuru YamadaBy: Christian Ruiz
  • He was born into a Japanese family with the parents named Masakichi and Mume Yamada.
  • Mitsuru was Born on June 5th, 1907 at Volcano house, Hawaii
  • I want to be a Fisherman
  • When Mitsuru was around the age of 5 and 6, after debating whether to go to Japan or stay in Hilo Hawaii, His father bought a boat in Hawaii which inspired both of them to want to become fishermen.
  • Growing up Mitsuru did not know a lot about his family heritage mainly due to his parents being so busy and what his grandparents went through during their time in Japan
  • Growing up Mitsuru did not know a lot about his family heritage due to the previous wars and his parents being so busy.
  • I’m sorry Mitsuru, but it’s Bert complicated. I have to go to work now.
  • Dad, what was your life like? What was Grandma and Grandpa Like?
  • While living in Hilo, Hawaii Mitsuru attended Waiakea Kai for school. The school was set up in two different sections, one very similar to American school, and the other more of its own style in Hawaii.
  • Listen up class, today we will learn english and math.
  • Why do I have to be here. I want to be a fisherman
  • Mitsuru did not exactly enjoy school, but was forced to go since it was what his parents wanted him to do.
  • Since Mitsuru’s father did not want to pay the money to become a true mechanic, he forced Mitsuru to go fishing with him and his, which eventually led to Mitsuru becoming a fisherman along as a cook boy.
  • This is very complicated, I might want to learn more and go to school.
  • Son I will teach you everything you need to know to become a true fisherman and cook boy.
  • After graduating from school Mitsuru decided he wanted to become a Mechanic.
  • Don’t worry about it. Your young, you’ll survive.
  • This is Unfair!! Why do I only get 5 dollars if you get 10?
  • Yes I can support my wife and have an enjoyable and stable life.
  • After working 7 years for his dad’s crew, during that time he got married and him and one of his friends decided to split a boat between them so they could make more money.
  • We are finally going to be free, and be able to make our own money
  • Mitsuru was beginning to find his way in life, which was hard for many people who lived in different countries other than America. But Tradegy struck…
  • Mitsuru had no idea what he was going to do. The start of the war not only the war but his whole race. It was going to be much harder to find a stable job.
  • What the heck!? What was that sound and why is everything dark?
  • Oh no, I do not know.
  • Unfortunately for Matsuru the blackout happend, which resulted in war between Japan and the allied forces
  • Ohh no the war has started, what are we going to do? How am I going to fish?
  • What am I gonna do? How am I gonna support my wife?
  • After the blackout, the war started and their were many regulations were put on certain activities.
  • Oh no how am I going to be able to recover from this? How can I support my wife?
  • No fishing or Boating allowed.
  • What do I do now? I have no work and cannot work with my crew.
  • Unfortunately for Mitsuru, fishing was banned, which was his source of income.
  • If only I could go back to the way I was living. At least I am safe
  • Mitsuru now was forced to work for the army by making camouflage nets and carrying lumber. He sustained many injuries while doing this.
  • Many Japanese people during this time in histoy worked the same job as Mitsuru and had to overcome the constant discrimination and low pay they were recieveing.
  • Hurry get inside the shelter!!!
  • Eventually the war was ended and all the bans were lifted. Mitsuru and his crew would go on to work as fisherman for a couple more years a fisherman until he they retired.
  • It feels good to be free.
  • Overall, Mitsuru story shows that people can overcome obstacles and still be able to live a normal life.
