Storyboard Text

  • Dear class: I'm Sopana, and I'll be your guide as we go through the atom. We shall start with the atom before moving on to the electrons. We will first find the electrons, then the nucleus, and then the protons and neutrons.
  • The fundamental and smallest components of matter, atoms also serve as the building blocks for all elements. Democritus, a Greek philosopher, made the initial discovery of the atom. The atom is electrically neutral and has no total charge. They are made up of protons, neutrons, and electrons.
  • Electron
  • Proton
  • Neutron
  • Electrons are the purple circles. An electron's charge is negative (-1). They exist in a cloud that orbits the nucleus and are situated outside the nucleus. The relative mass of an electron is 0.00055 amu. You can probably guess how little and light these are!
  • Electron
  • During classtime...
  • The nucleus is the dark green circle in the center. Protons and neutrons make up the tiny, dense area known as the atomic nucleus. It carries a positive charge. The nucleus of an atom contains the vast majority of its mass.
  • Right now, we are examining the big picture down to the atom.
  • Protons are the red circles in the image. The charge on protons is positive (+1). They can be found within the nucleus. Around 1 amu is the relative mass of a proton. They are heavier than the electron but only somewhat lighter than the neutron.
  • Proton
  • We are outside the nucleus, talking aboutelectrons.
  • The neutrons are the gray rings found inside the nucleus. They carry no charge (0). They might be discovered inside the nucleus just like protons. Their relative mass is around 1 amu. Protons and electrons are lighter than neutrons.
  • Now that the electrons have been passed, the nucleus is at the core of the atom.
  • Nucleus
  • Inside the nucleus, we just discovered the proton.
  • We are learning more about neutrons, which are found in the nucleus adjacent to protons.
