- Starr Carter is a 16-year-old African-American girl who lives in the fictional, mostly poor black neighborhood of Garden Heights, but attends an affluent predominantly white private school, Williamson Prep.
- After a police officer shots her friend khalil, Starr carter must gain the courage and confidence within herself to testify before a grand jury to seek justice for khalil's death.
- After One-Fifteen shoots Khalil, Starr gives a statement to the police about what happened. However, at Khalil's funeral. Starr decides that she can no longer keep silent and agrees to testify before the grand jury.
- King sets Maverick's store on fire; ultimately, Starr and the others manage to escape, and King is arrested.
- The grand jury decides not to prosecute One-Fifteen. Starr speaks at the head of the protest but gets caught in the ensuing chaos when police throw canisters of tear gas. Starr and her friends take refuge at the Carter family store, .
- Starr become brave and spoke to many people of what really happened in television and protests. But this didn't change the cause of One-fifteen killed khalil. The cause was forgotten, but the community become friendly without king.
