  • Mahatma Gandhi, byname of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was born October 2, 1869, Porbandar, India. He was a Indian lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer who became the leader of the nationalist movement against the British rule of India.
  • The 'Quit India' Movement
  • Gandhi travelled to South Africa after becoming a lawyer. Indians did not have the same rights as white people at the time since the British Empire ruled. Gandhi conducted an eight-year campaign in South Africa. Authorities imprisoned, assaulted, and shot his supporters. He did have some success in persuading the government to approve Indian marriages and reducing discriminatory levies on Indians.

  • The salt marches were his most famous demonstration in 1930. This was a protest against the salt tax, which disproportionately impacted India's poorest inhabitants. Thousands of Indians accompanied Gandhi on his 24-day journey from Ahmadabad to the Arabian Sea.
  • The Death of Mahatma Gandhi
  • Because Gandhi quit politics in 1934, the struggle for independence was not always constant. He did, however, return to the public eye during World War II as part of the 'Quit India' movement.
  • India gained freedom in 1947, yet there was a division. India and Pakistan were divided. This resulted in a lot of violence and death. Gandhi vowed to fast till death during violence between Muslims and Hindus in India. However, because of the strong affection Gandhi instilled in the people, this danger caused part of the fighting to cease.
