Storyboard Text

  • 1492, Christoper Columbus, an Italian explorer from Spain, landed in the Americas searching for a faster route to Asia.
  • 1519 Pineda left from Jamacia to explore the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. He was the first European to observe the Texas coast. Some were arrested by Cortes who saw the explorers as a threat to his mission.
  • Cortes was sent to present day Mexico in 1519 The Aztecs viewed Cortes and his men as gods for their horses, firearms, and metal armor. They overthrew the Aztecs and gave Spain Riches and a new base.
  • In 1526, Cabeza De Vaca was in an expedition that was lost and struck by a hurricane, the boats were shipwrecked on Galveston Island. The Karankawas gave them food and shelter. Many Spaniards died from the conditions. Cabeza De Vaca and several men had some knowledge of healing and traveled to different tribes. They told people about Cibola, a fabled city of gold.
  • Fray Marcos De Niza thought he had found the city of gold but only turned out to be an Adobe village. Francisco Vasquez de Cornado and 1,000 me went in search for Cibola in 1540. They found the Pacific Ocean, explored into Present day Kansas, and found the Grand Canyon. The Spanish ignored Texas until another country settled which was France.

  • La Salle was a French explorer. He explored the Great Lakes region of the United States and Canada, the Mississippi River, and the Gulf of Mexico. He claimed the entire Mississippi River basin for France. Once he reached the mouth of the Mississippi river, he was killed by his men.
