After America and Great Britain made the Jay treaty, France felt the new treaty went against the US-French treaty so they start capturing over 300 American ships.

In return, President Adams sent three diplomats to make peace with France. They met up with three unnamed spies known as XYZ from France, with a demand to pay a bribe of $250k and a loan of $10 million in order to speak with Talleyrand. The American diplomats were outraged.

President Adams, I ask for peace. I don't really want to fight anymore. Kinda busy fighting Britain.
After the failure of a peace talk, president Adams decided to build up his army and navy to capture over 80 French ships. After a back and forth battle, president Adams makes peace with France and signs a peace treaty.
