"Was life better before the Revolution than it is now?"
Winston goes into a bar and seems to find an old man. Winston notices that the old man could answer his question. Winston and the old man talk, but Winston doesn't seem to get the answers he wants. Instead the old man keeps on interrupting and brining up stories from his past. This is important to the story because it shows that Winston could possibly get the answers he wants to know. It also shows how Winston was able to interact with the old man. It also adds character development later one when Winston starts to reflect.
Winston decides to check out the room Mr. Charrington offers him to see. While inspecting and looking around, Winston can't help but murmur that there was no telescreen in the room. This is important to the story because it shows how the Proles live without being supervised, they are just seen as animals, yet they have more freedom than Winston.
Winston was trying to be as clear as he could to the old man for the answers he was seeking. However, Winston wasn't able to get what he was looking for. He then proceeds to lay back on the window. He starts to question, if everyone with the knowledge of how life was back then, not being able to remember, there would be no one to say if life before the Revolution was better than it is now. What would happen would be the falsification of history itself and more lies. There being no one left to answer the question. This is important to the story because Winston has begun to think how the future will look like. He is acknowleding that without there being anyone to say life was better before, what is currently happening will stay the same.
While Winston was looking around the room, he comes across a painting that gets his attention. A building with rectangular windows. Along with a statue at the rear end. He then notices he has seen it and where it was located. Mr. Charrington then goes on to explain it was a church. This is important to the story because Winston notices that the painting was of a church. He then recognizes that it is now ruins. It goes to show that Winston's idea of another life before the Revolution is there.
