- Who's the main character(s)?
- The main characters in this story are Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym.Gradwitz had hated Znaeym, which is shown in the line "...if there was a man in the world whom he (Gradwitz) detested and wished ill to it was Georg Znaeym..." (Saki 1).Znaeym also hated Gradwitz.
- What did the character want?
- A famous lawsuit regarding the ownership of a strip of land between the two men occurred years before the story takes place. The lawsuit ended with Gradwitz owning the land.Gradwitz wanted Georg Znaeym dead due to a longstanding feud and land dispute after the lawsuit between the two. Gradwitz also suspected that Znaeym was poaching on his land. Georg Znaeym had also wished death upon Gradwitz because he believed that he was the rightful owned of the land, and disagrees with the outcome of the lawsuit.You can see this in the quote "...the dispossessed party had never acquiesced in the judgement of the Courts..." (Saki 1).The grudges had continued for a long time, shown in the quote: "The neighbor feud had grown into a personal one since Ulrich had come to be the head of the family..." (Saki 1).
- What was the problem?
- Gradwitz and Znaeym's rivalry had grown into a personal hate, and was about a strip of property that each thought that they owned, and that the other did not. This was one of the major problems that both characters were facing.Another problem that the characters were facing was when both men had gotten trapped by a fallen beech tree.
