  • Pre Columbian Culture of Natives (and modern day)
  • Although there were many different native cultures across what is now the USA, there were some cultural aspects that were shared across the bored. A major one is the connection with the land (a connection that is still present in Native tribes today). Land is not something that is viewed to be owned by one single individual alone, instead it is viewed to be a communal shared thing. Native spiritual beliefs focused (focus) on animism, the belief in nature spirits and deities and the belief that everything is interconnected. Depending on the tribe there is also the belief of a Great Spirit/Creator as well as respect and tribute towards their ancestors.

  • Pre Columbian History of Natives
  • Native Americans were the first people to arrive and settle in the Americas thousands of years ago. Before European contact it is said that there were over 1,000 different tribes. They could be found all the way from the Southwestern region of the U.S all the way to Eastern Woodlands. There were also 300+ distinct languages such as Algonquian and Siouan. It's important to note that although they had the same ancestors, the tribes of pre-colonial America all had their own distinct languages, cultures, practices, and religions. It was just about as diverse as modern day America! It is also important to know that they also achieved many different accomplishments. They had established cities like Cahokia (Illinois) and inventions like hammocks, canoes, and even baby bottles!

  • Current Status in America
  • Legally, Natives tribes are viewed as sovereign nations while the us holds plenary authority. However, their economic status is slow, with many reservations having high poverty rates. Many tribes are not legally consulted before the U.S government takes action and many are still fighting to get back their lands. Along with that there is currently a large amount of violence against Native women that although should get lots of attention, it does not.
