  • In "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is Mankind is its own worst enemy. This is first shown when Les Goodman's car suddenly starts up in the midst of everything being down or not working. Most of the population of Maple Street sees this and turns into a mob, walking towards Les's house (76). The people of Maple Street put their suspicions on Les because his car started up unexpectedly. This shows people come to conclusions that aren't always the ideal option. Furthermore, when night fell on Maple Street after Charlie shot Pete, everyone turned on Charlie (83). To get everyone's suspicions off of himself, he looked to Tommy as a scapegoat and told the people of Maple Street that Tommy was the alien. This discloses that people are quick to defend themselves when in fear or threatened. In addition, after the Aliens look out on Maple Street and the camera becomes transfixed on the sky the narrator voices the last parts of the show stating, "...Prejudices can kill and Suspicion can destroy..." (86). This means that the worst and strongest weapons are confined in the minds of humanity and their many prejudices. All in all, Humanity is always at the mercy of themselves and their judgments.
