Storyboard Text

  • In the story Al Capone Does My Shirts, Warden Williams lives on Alcatraz island in a lavish mansion. On page 35, the text states that, “Across the road from the cell house is a fancy mansion with flowerpots on the steps and curtains in the windows,” which proves that the warden’s residence was a gorgeous mansion.
  • According to the book Al Capone Does My Shirts, on page 36, the book states that Piper and Moose both attend the Marina School. The school is not located on Alcatraz island, but on the mainland, so they have to take a ferry to get there.
  • In the story, Al Capone Does My Shirts, the mail the cons received was thoroughly censored. On page 128, Piper tells Moose that the mail is censored by her mother, further proving the fact that the mail is very cautiously censored.
  • In real life, the warden lived on Alcatraz in a manor. According to the website "Alcatraz facts and figures," “The warden lived in a large house adjacent to the cell house. The Author’s Notes also support this claim, as they state, “The warden lived in a beautiful mansion located right next door to the cell house.”
  • According to the Author’s Notes, “During 1935 all of the Alcatraz kids took the boat to San Francisco, where they attended school. The only exception was made for kindergarten-age children, who attended a kindergarten held on Alcatraz, taught by one of the moms who lived on the island.” “The article The Children Who Once Called Alcatraz Home: ‘For us, it was a big playground'” also backs up the claim made in the Author’s Notes. It states, “For the older kids, our school bus was the boat that took us to the mainland.”
  • In real life, the mail was censored by the wives of the guards. According to the text, "The prisoners' personal mail was taken home by different officers to let their wives read." The article "Minimum Privileges" also supports this statement as it states, "All outgoing correspondence was monitored and censored."
