- Intro
- Philip Sletherby was going to Brill Manor, the country's residence of his new acquaintance, Mrs Saltpen-Jago, who was a person of great influence in Chalkshire . He had great hopes that he would be chosen as a possible successor. He boarded the train and seated himself with a magazine. Opposite him was a young man of about twenty-two.
- Hello good morning , are you also going to Brill Manor
- Surely I will lend you
- Oh, very sad !!!. I have left my wallet at home specially when a coin purse has a crest on it
- No, I am going for 3-day fishing trip and will be stopping at a little country inn. Could you lend me a few pounds, I will be highly obliged
- Both the men were seated in the car Sletherby's eyes were fixed on the door panel on which were displayed two crest: A running greyhound and a demi-lion holding a cross- crosslet in it's paw. Just as the car turned in at the Brill entrance Claude People captured Sletherby's attention by switching his remarks to the personality of their hostess.
- When your mother wrote to me, giving me a list of trains, there was a running grey hound on her paper
- Bertie what is this crest you are talking about
- Mr Sletherby, it is the demi-lion holding a cross-crosslet in it's paw
- That is the Jago crest. Actually speaking we are really Saltpens and we have the right to use both
- Bye, for now. You some thing I have never met your mother. Though we have corresponded several times.
- Oh she is so much like me. She has the same brown and high color. Oh so, goodbye Mr Sletherby
- Ok, my station is the next one and I have to say bye to you. You have forgotten to lend me the three quid
- The train moved on, and leaving Bertie(the so-called son of the Saltpen-Jago family)cursing himself on the platform the train drew up at the destination where Sletherby had to get down
- Hello Sletherby, happy to know that we were on the same train, are you spending the the weekend at Brill Manor. Good!!!, Then we will have a round of golf tomorrow
- What change? you only know her just lately. She used to have beautiful dark brown hair, which went very well with her fresh complexion. But suddenly after five weeks, she suprised everyboard by appearing as a brilliant blond.
- Here we come, what's the matter with you, you look rather sick.
- Brilliant woman, level - headed, a clear thinker, influential women, I dare not upset her but she is too restless. Good Appearance, till she made that idiotic change.
