  • How was school?
  • I don't want to talk about it
  • no, I did not get my sweater
  • Mr. Hummel yelled at me for getting a question wrong because I was not paying attention and because i was playing with my pencil
  • What happened?
  • He sent me out to the hall, but I can't help it . My class laughed at me.
  • ok
  • What
  • I booked an appointment with Dr. Pubben because this has been happening a lot lately and I want to know why
  • Emma, I need to tell you something
  • Emma has been not able to pay attention and she said that she can't help it. This has been going on since she was in grade two, now she is in grade 4.
  • Hi guys, its great to see you again, so what brings you here
  • Ok Emma, I want to ask you some questions
  • What's that
  • ADHD is a conditions that mostly children get. It makes it very hard to focus and sometimes people with ADHD tend to play with things, for example your pencil at scholl
  • Well Emma, the only thing that I can think of that you have is ADHD
  • Are there any symptoms
  • ADHD is an academic and behavioral disorder involves problems in 3 basic areas: hyperactivity , problems controlling impulses problems with attention and concentration
  • Yes, there are, but before I show you let me tell you more about ADHD
  • Here are the symptoms for each
  • Symptoms : signs of hyperactivity include: feeling restless, often fidgeting with hands or feet, or squirmingrunning, climbing, or leaving a seat, in situations where sitting or quiet behavior is expectedSigns of impulsivity are: blurting out answers before hearing the whole questionhaving difficulty waiting in line or for a turnSigns of inattention include: becoming easily distracted by irrelevant sights and soundsfailing to pay attention to details and making careless mistakesrarely following instructions carefully and completelylosing or forgetting things like toys, or pencils, books, and tools needed for a task
  • Wow, this sure does sound like a lot of the things you do Emma, doesn't it!
  • Yes I have
  • So, I am guessing that you have done some of these things before
  • It sure does!
  • So Doc, does ADHD effect the brain?
  • Yes it does. ADHD is caused by low levels of neurotransmitters transmitting between the prefrontal cortical area and Dopamine
  • Dopamine also controls your emotions too
  • Well I think so, but that's not a very bad thing. In a survey in 2016 6.1 million people had ADHD and a estimated 5-10% of school aged kids have ADHD in the US. Emma you are not alone.
  • So ,does this mean I have ADHD?
  • So do these medications have any side effects
  • Not exactly. ADHD last for your whole life but there is treatment. Doctors like me recommend that you see a therapists and take medication like Ritalin
  • Every medication has there side effect here's Ritalin. Now don't be surprised on how many there are , it still is a very good medication that I recommend
  • So, can you just get rid of this ADHD
  • mild effect of Ritalin are :agitation ,an energized feeling, a headache, difficulty sleeping, moodiness, anxiety, nausea, reduced appetiteSever effects are: cardiovascular reactions, including sudden death, stroke, and heart attack, increased blood pressure ,increased heart rate (tachycardia),psychiatric adverse reactions, including worsening of a pre-existing psychiatric condition, development of new psychotic or manic symptoms, sustained and sometimes painful erections in males, poor circulation, including Raynaud’s phenomenon, long-term suppression of growth and weight loss in pediatric patients
  • Wow, that's a lot of side effects, but if you say that you recommend it then may you prescribe it to Emma?
  • Sure thing come pick it up on Sunday. Also if any of Emma's teachers get mad at her for not paying attention, let them know that she has ADHD .
  • I have a question, What does ADHD stand for anyways
  • Cool, I did not know that
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
  • Bye, see you soon
  • I hope you enjoyed my comic strip
  • And learned more about ADHD
