  • The Monsters Are Due Om Maple Street Theme: Fear and suspicion are destructive
  • Slide: 2
  • One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is that fear and suspicion are destructive. One example that supports this them is when the residents get scared when they find out that Les Goodman like to stand out on his porch when he can't sleep. They thought he was the monster. But by doing that they ruined his families relationship with their neighbors.(Page 75) Another example is when Charlie gets scared because he sees a dark figure, so without thinking he decides to shoot it. Later finding out that it is Pete Van Horn. By doing this it permanently destroyed his life and made his family and friends miss him. This shows that by being scared or suspicious of something can lead to destroying something or someone else's life.(Page 83)The third example is after the whole thing happened with Charlie, he blamed being the monster on Tommy just because Tommy likes to read comic books. This is an example of fear and suspicion are destructive just because someone was scared and suspicious they decided to ruin their lives for no real reason. (Page 85) In conclusion I think when you are scared or suspicious you don'y need to jump to conclusions.
