  • On April 12 1861 forces from the Confederate States of America attacked the United States military garrison at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. Less than two days later, the fort surrendered. No one was killed. The battle, however, started the Civil War, the bloodiest war the United States has fought till this day.1
  • September 17, 1862 The battle of Antietam. Near Sharpburg Maryland this was a major win for the Union. Also in the process had ended the Confederate invasion.

  • The Appomattox Court House in County, Virginia April 9, 1865, the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia in the McLean House in the village of Appomattox Court House. Also marks the beginning of the country's transition to peace and reunification following four years of Civil War.
