Mrs. Edna Green has been enjoying retirement. However, her hip has been bothering her. She decides to go to her local hospital to have a routine hip replacement operation
Prior to the operation, Edna was tested for Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). This is a gram positive bacteria that is spread by touching contaminated blood or bodily fluids. This bacteria can cause many skin infections and toxic shock syndrome. Edna's test came back negative and she was started on cefuroxime to prevent a post-operative infection.
Edna's surgery went well and she was placed in the recovery ward. This ward was old fashioned and there was not much space between the beds. The hospital was extremely short staffed and had to leave to help another patient when they were caring for Edna. The surgeon did not use alcohol gel before treating her wound. There was lots of visitors and inadequate cleaning of the ward
Three days later Edna developed an infection. It was determined that she developed Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). She was placed on Vancomycin and her hospital stay got delayed. She was able to make a full recovery. However, five other patients on the ward also test positive for MRSA. The hospital closed the ward and gathered an infectious control team to prevent this from happening again.
I think it was because the surgeon did not sanitize his hands prior to treating patients. I also think it could have been caused from the short nursing staff.
Alright infectious control team, what do you think caused the recent MRSA outbreak in the ward?
I think it was caused by the visitors not sanitizing their hands and the uncleaned areas. I also think it could have been caused by not testing each patient for MRSA prior to them entering the ward.
We should make sure that we have adequate nursing staff. We should also make sure that all healthcare workers sanitize their hands before and after treating a patient.
Those are all very likely possibilities. What procedures should we put in place to ensure we do not get another MRSA outbreak?
We should make sure that all visitors sanitize their hands. We should also make sure that all areas of the hospital are cleaned regularly. Finally, we should make sure that all patients are tested for MRSA before placing them in a room with other patients.
