- Abigail Williams
- "Now look you. All of you. We danced. AndTituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters. Andthat is all. And mark this. Let either of you breathe aword, or the edge of a word, about the other things,and I will come to you in the black of some terriblenight and I will bring a pointy reckoning that willshudder you."
- Shows how she behaves irrationally and is mean. It also shows how she wants to control everything.
- She thinks that she is responsible for condemning all of the "witches" in town.
- They are all witches and controlled by the Devil!
- Abby's motives for accusing everyone is that she wants to have John Proctor to herself. She thinks that if she gets rid of everyone else then he will have no other option than her.
- The consequences for Abby had to pay was that John Proctor did the opposite of what she was hoping. Instead of ending up loving her he ended up hating her because she said that his wife was a witch.
- You are a terrible person and you must pay for your sins by saying you cannot see anymore.
- John Proctor He wants to protect his wife. His behaviors are influenced by his emotions and he acts upset with Mary Warren. People are becoming suspicious of him because he doesn't go to church, and Abigail is getting upset with him because he doesn't trust her. He expects that Abigail will listen to his threats and confess that she has been lying. John Proctor is responsible for looking out for his family. John Proctor yells, "Herrick! Herrick, don't chain her! He rushes out the door. From outside: Damn you, man, you will not chain her! Off with them! I'll not have it! I will not have her chained!" This shows how much John Proctor cares about his wife an family.
- Elizabeth Proctor She wants to protect her family and she wants to know if there is anything between John and Abigail still. Her behaviors are suspicious and cautious. She is suspicious of John and she wants to be cautious to make sure she is not accused of being a witch. Abby hates her because she fired her because of Abby's affair with John. Abby's hate for Elizabeth is also the reason that Elizabeth is being accused of witchery. Elizabeth expects that John will look after the kids in the event of her death. She also expects John to save her and prove her innocent. She is responsible for taking care of her children and being John's wife. Elizabeth says, "with great fear: I will fear nothing. She looks about the room, as though to fix it in her mind. Tell the children I have gone to visit someone sick." This shows how strong Elizabeth is because even though she is afraid she reassures her husband that she is fine. She is also putting her children's well-being in mind.
