I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself and falls on th' other
Act II Scene iv Line 28
Thriftless ambition, that will raven upThine own lives' means!
There is personification when Macbeth says this quote because, he doesn't want the light to see but light can't see. The theme of ambition is shown because Macbeth shows his true colors and that he wants to get Duncan out of the way so he can take the throne.
Act III Scene i Line 47-48
To be thus is nothing,But to be safely thus.
Macbeth uses personification to explain how eager and greedy he is about power. It connects to the theme of ambition because he is aware of this tension that is holding him back and he needs the ambition to succeed.
Act IV Scene i Line 60-61
Even till destruction sicken, answer meTo what I ask you.
There is dramatic irony when Ross speaks because he thinks Duncan's sons were the ones that killed Duncan but it was actually Macbeth. Although he was wrong and accused the wrong person he was right about how ambition is the cause of his death to take over the throne.
Act V Scene v Line 23-26
Out, out, brief candle!Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor playerThat struts and frets his hour upon the stageAnd then is heard no more.
Macbeth uses repetition to explain his fear that he believes that he is unsafe when Banquo is still alive. This connects to the theme of ambition because Macbeth will do anything to stay king, so he thinks killing the noblest person who knows about the prophecy will save him.
The quote in this scene used foreshadows Macbeth's death. He asks the witches what is going to happen in the future so they manipulate their words to seem like he is safe. This follows the theme of ambition because he desires to know what could get in his way of being king.
When Macbeth talks about a brief candle, it is a metaphor to connect life and how it burns for a short while like a candle, and how there is no point to life if it is going to be put out anyway. The theme of ambition is shown because his ambition and desire to have power as king is not worth it anymore and it is pointless.
The queen, my lord, is dead.
