  • Sorry, kids. I guess there will be no playing outside today due to the rain, but who said we could not have fun inside?
  • *Giggles*
  • Okay! Now Simon Says for everyone to hop on their left leg and hold their right arm out! Remember follow the leader, me! You guys are doing such a great job!
  • Look at me Mrs. M!
  • I hope I don't fall.
  • *RING*
  • *Giggles*
  • Alright children! Gather around please. You know what that ringing sound means right? It is finally time to go home and clean up our mess here.
  • PLEASE DO NOT RUN! It is not safe, so please walk carefully when you get your umbrellas.
  • Do we have to? I like it here Mrs. M!
  • Look Maya! Come share my rain stopper, I mean um-umbwella, with me!
  • Mom is gonna be so mad I forgot my rain coat this morning!
  • The horn on the bus go beep, beep, beep...
  • Now we both know you were supposed to get your jacket this morning before the bus like I told you to, correct? We'll talk about it more inside, but let's get out of this rain first.
  • I accept your apology. Now let's hurry and run inside before we get sick.
  • It wasn't my fault, but why? I'm sorry.
  • Title Page
  • I didn't see it before I left and I not *takes deep breath* want to bo-bo-bother you.
  • Are you ready to explain to me as to why you left your jacket and umbrella this morning?
  • There is nothing wrong with asking me for help, but I am sorry that mama made you feel like you could not ask me for help. Next time, please ask me. Mama loves you and are you ready to tell me about your day?
  • A rainy day stops the children from having fun outside, however Mrs. M, the teacher, has other plans to keep the children's mind stimulated.
  • And then-and then, Mrs. M told us to bounce on our leg and raise one arm up at the same time! It was really dif-dif- hard, but I did it, mommy! She told me I did a great job!
  • DI-DI-DI-FUH-KLT. Difficit, No, I mean difficult. I did it mommy! I did it!
  • That's great Maya! And the word you were trying to say was "difficult". DI-FUH-KLT.
  • Between the ages five to eight, children can now understand and combine multiple sentences which is why Simon Says tests their listening skills and cognitive skills. (Child 5-12 Years | Ages and Stages Developmental Milestones | SLT for Kids | Speech Language Therapy, Across Manchester the North West, n.d.)
  • Can we watch tv now because I ate all of my wegetables?
  • Yes, but only for two *holds two fingers up* hours. You have school in the morning.
  • Due to the routine Mrs. M enforces daily, some of the children are now used to their day-to-day schedule without getting too antsy. However, this is a situation that requires clear and direct instructions.
  • *Sings* Time for your checkup. Time for your check up. I'm gonna check your ears, check your eyes, find out, how much you've grooowwwwwwn....
  • At the age of five, children should be able to understand certain words, even if they mispronounce them. Some may pronounce "r" as "w" and "f" as "fink". (Language Development: 5-8 Years, 2021)
  • *Giggles* Why mommy?
  • Why is peter pan always flying?
  • *Gasp dramitically* BECAUSE HE NEVERLANDS! *tickles Maya*
  • Children understands that words are made of different sound and syllables which is why they will either play rhyming games or sing nursery rhymes. (Language Development: 5-8 Years, 2021)
  • And the princess and the beast lived happily ever after...The End. Sweet dreams sweetie. Mama loves you.
  • Children are naturally curious, so they will often ask why, how, and what questions. It is not to be rude, but because they genuinely want to know. (Child 5-12 Years | Ages and Stages Developmental Milestones | SLT for Kids | Speech Language Therapy, Across Manchester the North West, n.d.)

  • Maya's mom is teaching clear communication skills by letting Maya talk without dismissing her, and then speaking once she is finished. Furthermore, parents have a large impact on the language development of children, especially since children absorb what they see, hear, or experience. (Focus on the Family, 2022)
  • O-O-Okay mama. Love you too and yes ma'am.
  • Maya's mom is correcting her without sounding condescending and scolding her for pronouncing it wrong more than once or twice. Plus, celebrating Maya's victory in saying the word correctly will motivate her to continue doing it.
  • You go baby! Gee-double oh-dee jay-oh-bee. Good job. Good job. *clap,clap*
  • Children will try negotiating to get what they want. For example, in this slide, Maya is negotiating the fact that she should be able to watch television since she ate all of her vegetables. (Child 5-12 Years | Ages and Stages Developmental Milestones | SLT for Kids | Speech Language Therapy, Across Manchester the North West, n.d.)
  • Maya is singing a song that constantly repeats the same sentence which will improve her dictation, combine sentences, and understand what every word means. (Language Development: 5-8 Years, 2021)
  • All right, Maya. It's been two hours and now it's time to say goodbye to Doc McStuffins. You know the drill.
  • Children are now able to understand jokes and riddles by the time they are eight years of age which is why Maya's mom is not only teaching her humor, but use abstract language as well. (Language Development: 5-8 Years, 2021)
  • *Giggles madly* Stop it mommy. Uncle! Uncle! I give up!
  • Story-teling is a great language development tactic because children between the ages of six to eight are able to use different sentence pronouns, stories are becoming long and more detailed, and create a logical sequence. (Language Development: 5-8 Years, 2021)
