  • Well there are some things that you need to know when taking care of him.
  • I understand that you will be the caregiver of your family member after his amputation
  • Yes I will be taking care of him. It will be so stressful
  • Well what are the things i should know?
  • Do not exceed the primary provider's recommendations regarding weight bearing and joint flexion
  • Adhere to the plan of scheduled exercises and complete each group of exercises as outlined by PT
  • Avoid gaining excess weight during the recovery period because weight gain may interfere with the use of a leg prosthesis
  • Expect phantom limb sensation - it is normalAvoid injury to the stump even though it appears to be healed, report any skin impairment immediately
  • Continue deep-breathing exercises until fully mobileContact the HCP if fever, chills productive cough, bleeding or oozing from stump, purulent drainage from the incision
  • Follow the primary provider's reommendations regarding caring for the stump, applying a stump dressing, washing the stump, and elevating the stump when sitting
  • Do not apply non-prescription drugs (ointments, creams, topical pain relievers) to the stump unless the primary provider has approved the use of a specific product
  • Well you will need to wash the bandages, rinse them well, and lay them flat to dry because hanging tends to decrease the elasticity.When they dry, they must be rolled without stretching
