Theme 1: Power Corrupts PeopleMacbeth at the beginning of the story was kind and caring. After hearing of the prophecy, he begins to spiral and progressively become a worse person, For example, hiring murderers to kill those close to him, even his closest friend and their son. By the end of the story he is completely too far gone and when he hears that his wife is dead he doesnt even care for a second and focuses back on protecting his title as king.
Theme 2: Strong ambition can lead to ruin. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, after hearing the prophecy, changed dramatically. Lady Macbeth was ruthless and was willing to push Macbeth to reach her goal. Repeatedly throughout the story, she would push Macbeth to also further her own goals. She begins to hallucinate and sleepwalk. By the end of the story she has gone fully mad and dies by what the reader can interpret as suicide.
Theme 3: Gender Roles. Lady Macbeth criticized Macbeth and talks about his masculinity multiple times throughout the story, When he is hallucinating Banquo's ghost, she pulls him aside and asks him are you a man? When he was second guessing killing Duncan, she continued to question his masculinity. Macbeth later says that she should only give birth to male children, because of her fearless spirit.
