  • ...And a homeless ascetic Hindu monk, starving himself to seek answers.
  • Slide: 2
  • The Four Sights inspired Siddhartha as much as it shocked him. He became determined to find a spiritual solution, so inspired that he gave up his princehood, his wealth, and his wife and son to wander and seek spiritual knowledge.
  • Why must everyone suffer? Is there no way to stop this? I must find a path...

  • With the goal to attain enlightenment, Siddhartha's life seemingly flipped upside down as he practiced rigorous meditation and extreme fasting for 6 years.
  • One day, he felt his physical weakness taking over, and concluded that self-denial is not the path to freedom from suffering.

  • Siddhartha decided on the Middle Way: a life of moderation. Not too little, not too much.
  • You shall never reach the truth!
  • He sat under a Bodhi tree in a lotus position and meditated. As he fell into a trance, he was tempted by Mara, the Lord of the Senses. However, this did not obstruct Siddhartha's path to enlightenment.

  • Eventually, Siddhartha reached a state of higher consciousness, and he began to understand the Four Noble Truths. He also experienced karma, the principle of reincarnation based on one's actions, good and bad.
  • These revelations allowed him to abandon his desires and become free from ignorance. He has achieved his goal of enlightenment: Nirvana. His suffering has come to an end, and he was released from the cycle of rebirth.

  • With his newfound wisdom, Siddhartha, now known as the Buddha, spent 45 years spreading his message. At the age of 80, the Buddha passed into Nirvana and his body was cremated. Though his physicalbody is gone, his teachings have been passed on for millennia to form one of the world's largest religions - Buddhism.
