  • Willy Biff’s Argument After Biff’s Homecoming
  • Willy: You had such promise, Biff! You could’ve been anything, and look at you now—working on some farm, throwing away your life!Biff: I never wanted what you wanted, Pop! I’m not like you, and I never will be. Why can’t you just accept that?Willy: Accept what? That my own son is a failure? You had colleges chasing after you! People respected you!Biff: No, they respected some fantasy version of me that you made up! I’m sick of living in your dream world.Resolution: The argument escalates without resolution. Willy refuses to let go of his idealized vision of Biff’s potential, while Biff grows increasingly resentful of Willy’s expectations. The tension remains unresolved, setting up deeper conflicts in Act 2.

  • Willy Charley: Card Game
  • Charley: (calmly) Willy, take the job. A little extra money wouldn’t hurt, would it?Willy: (defensive) I don’t need your damn charity, Charley! I’m doing just fine. I’m well-liked! Things’ll turn around any day now.Charley: (sighs) Willy, the world doesn’t run on being “well-liked.” It runs on hard work and smarts. You gotta face reality.Willy: (angrily) What do you know about reality? You don’t even have personality! You’re just lucky, that’s all! Resolution: There is no resolution. Willy refuses Charley’s help, clinging to his belief that charm and popularity determine success. Charley, frustrated but still sympathetic, lets the conversation drop, foreshadowing Willy’s deeper struggles with pride and failure.

  • Willy V Willy: Flashback to Biff’s High School Days
  • Willy (Illusion): (proudly, in a dreamlike state) Look at him, the star of the football team! Scholarships lining up! He’s going places, I tell you!Willy (Reality): (muttering) But he didn’t go anywhere… he’s a farmhand. He’s… he’s lost.Willy (Illusion): (ignoring this) They love him! He’ll do big things, just wait and see.Willy (Reality): (desperate) Then why can’t I sleep at night? Why do I feel like I’ve failed?Resolution: There is no true resolution. Willy keeps slipping into illusion rather than facing reality. His denial of Biff’s failures (and his own) drives his downward spiral.
