  • The British could gain hold on India primarily because Indiawas not unified, the British were able to take possession of India. TheBritish were very active in infiltrating these states and gaining powergradually. Often they left the local princes in charge of the different partsof India. In upholding British rule, these local princes were productive andbenefited much from being loyal to the British.
  • From 1858 onwards, the British government directly ruled India, and it became known as the British Raj

  • In 1947 India, havingcontributed enormously to Britain's war effort, became independent where they lost India. Less than ayear later, communistguerrillas launched a violent campaign aimed at forcing Britain from Malaya. Thousands were killed, but an effectivepolitical and military response prevented a Communist take-over.
