This is an important scene because the messenger comes to the queen to notify her on useful information about Oedipus's prophecy. The news he would be giving her would be good but will live up to the saying, the truth hurts.
Unexpected News?
I come from Corinth. The words I bring may bring you joy... though they are not without some pain.
Oh for god's sake, master, ask no more!
Know that the... the child... so people said... was his.
Well then... it was a child of the house of Laius.
This scene is important because it is the exact moment that Oedipus finds out that his actual father is the man he murdered along with the other men and his mother is his wife the mother to his kids/siblings. This leaves Oedipus in utter shock and it leaves a big affect on his mental well-being.
Worst Fears Coming True
Was he born of slave or of one of Lauis's own children?
If I have to question you again... you are finished.
He tore the brooches from her robe and raised them and plunged them into the sockets of his eyes... he stabbed his eyes until the blood ran down his cheeks and matted his beard.
This scene is very important because it tells/shows how all the previous events leading up to this one has caused some serious damage. Not only to the city of Thebes, but to Oedipus as well since he has now gouged out his eyes after finding out his mother/wife has killed herself. This left the people from Thebes seeing who Oedipus really is.
The Ending
Connecting the Dots
No longer shall these eyes see such agony as this!...No longer see the things that I have done... the things that I have suffered.
