  • Douglass had a hard time working for Mr. Covey, who was known for "breaking" slaves, and Douglass was beaten often.
  • Climax
  • What?! How is he fighting back?
  • This time, I will NOT let Mr. Covey beat me.
  • Douglass got sick while working, then he goes to Mr. Auld to ask him if he could leave Mr. Covey and come back, but Mr. Auld said no.
  • Resolution
  • This root really DID prevent Mr. Covey from beating me, it is special.
  • As he is returning to Mr. Covey, Douglass meets Sandy, who gives him instructions to find a special root which can prevent you from getting beaten. 
  • First, you need to find a special root in the woods that will prevent Mr. Covey from whipping you.
  • When Douglass comes back, Covey tackles him and they get into a fight, and Douglass fights back.
  • Douglass found out that the root that Sandy gave him prevented him from getting beaten, and that he stood up to Mr. Covey and fought back.
