One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling Is that Fear and suspicion are destructive. For example, when the group saw a shadow figure walking and getting closer to them Charlie who has a shotgun in his hand shoots him because he thought it was a monster but it ends up being Pete Van Horn. This shows that since he is scared of the figure he decides to shoot him without seeing who it was first.Another example is after Charlie shot Pete Van Horn he is scared and is being accused of being the monster because his lights in his house went on when no one else's house did.Charlie starts to run away but then a man tackles him to the floor and when Charlie gets up he punches the man away and he then runs into his house. This shows that the fear of killing someone and being accused at the same time made his run away from the group. One last example is when at the end of the book, everyone is blaming each other saying it's the kid or Steve and Charlie and then that resulted to violence such as the group breaking the glass windows of the houses. This shows that since everyone was scared of who it could be, they all went up against their friends/neighbors with destruction and weapons.Fear and suspicion are destructive is the main theme in "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Sterling it shows that when you are scared it will make you do big action that might make you thing about later and to not blame anyone without a reason.
