Gunpowder is a highly flammable substance that when lit it explodes. I was invented in China around 150AD by an unknown alchemist. It was first made to be a potion for immortality. It was first written about by Wei Boyang in 142 AD who described a mixture that would fly and dance violently. Gunpowder is made up of three ingredients sulfur, charcoal, and potassium nitrate.
Gunpowder explosiveness makes it perfect for launching things. Gunpowder explosiveness comes from when sulfur reacts to heat. When sulfur heats up it ignites and that then lights the charcoal on fire. The heat that this creates causes causes the nitrate molecules to tear apart releasing oxygen which aids the reaction. Then when Potassium nitrate, sulfur, and carbon react with each other they create nitrogen, carbon dioxide, heat energy, and potassium nitrate. The large amount of heat causes the gasses to expand rapidly and as the gasses try to escape they push the projectile far away. This is why gunpowder is used in guns and TNT as its released gas pressure can push a bullet or break rock.
Gunpowder has had a major impact on the world today as it affected how we fight wars. The most famous thing gunpowder is known is its involvement in weapons as its effectiveness in battle revolutionized how we fight wars as it moved wars being fought melee based to range based. Before the introduction of gunpowder weapons we fought with swords and spears. But when the gunpowder came in, its effectiveness change everything with war being raged now with guns and bullets and that still reigns today where even modern times.
