Elie and the other prisoners were tired and thirsty from running through the snow. Even though everyone was on the verge of dying, they had to carry on to survive.
Man Vs God
Elie is forced to lay down on a crate and be whipped on the back. He is being beaten by another person as a form of punishment.
Man Vs Society
"They think I'm mad… I no longer care to live. I am alone. But I wanted to come back to warn you. Only no one is listening to me…" (Wiesel 7)
Elie is debating with himself whether he should give up and die or continue on. He is tempted by the idea of no longer having to feel the pain in his foot or the cold of the snow, but he realizes he has no right to die in front of his father.

Elie is questioning the existence and power of God. He doesn't really understand why He would let Elie and his fellow prisoners go through this torture. Elie is losing faith in his God.
Moishe the Beadle comes back to tell the people of Sighet what he saw when taken prisoner to try and warn them, but no body believes him. Everyone thinks that everything is okay and nothing that horrible could happen, so they call him crazy.
