Storyboard Text

  • The erie canal was opened in 1825! This was a huge break through because it connected New York to Chicago
  • The railroad became super popular in the 1860's. Almost all modes of trade over land was done with the railroad.
  • In 1832 Samuel F. B. Morse invented morse code which helped propel the speed of journalism and how fast information could be obtained.
  • In 1846 Richard Hoe invented the steam-powered cylinder rotary press which made in cheaper and faster to print papers.
  • When people found out they could burn coal for power factories started popping up everywhere.
  • SInce they could now have power without relying on water they started going to other places they could never be before.
  • All of these inventions helped the start of the civil war in some kind of way. The trade allowed more communication between the south and the north which cause more conflicts.
  • The Monroe Doctrine was written in 1823. This stopped all european powers from colonizing in America forever.
  • It didn't have many immediate effects but it helped express the growing spirit of nationalism.
  • Also the monroe doctrine showed that the United States was the prominent power in the western hemisphere.
  • The monroe doctrine forced the english to stop colonizing in america. This allowed for there to be more state born citizens. Which in turn means there is more people that hate slavery.
  • By 1820, white settlers had pushed well beyond the Mississippi River, and the population of western regions was increasing more rapidly than the rest of the nation. 
  • he farmland was so much more plentiful out there so people started moving out there like crazy.
  • They used many things to get westward like boat, wagons, foot, pack horses, cattle, hand carts, and even hogs.
  • Once people got settled they would plant corn for food to go along with hunting. 
  • As the settlers continued to keep moving west the more wealthier settlers would come behind them and take their old land and houses and make it better.
  • The westward expansion allowed for more states but meant more political issues over slavery because they had to have the same amount as slave states as they did free states.
