- Odysseus leaves his newborn son, Telemachus, with his wife, Penelope, when he is called to fight in the Trojan War.

- " 'As for Odysseus, he perished far from home,' " (Page 24, Lines 192-193)
- The Odyssey starts off in media res and Telemachus is introduced to the goddess Athena who will guide Telemachus. Homer, the author, calls Athena, "The grey-eyed goddess." (Page 7, Line 219).
- Book 4
- "Poor Penelope and Telemachus, abandoned by Odysseus,"
- Penelope is being forced to marry a suitor because Odysseus hasn't returned from the war after over ten years. Telemachus also tries to protect his mom against the suitors by calling a town meeting.
- Book 5
- Telemachus meets Lord Nestor who tells him about Odysseus' journey without revealing his identity.Telemachus gets to learn more about his farther and his journey.
- Telemachus is aided by Athena as he begins his journey to find his father. He stops at the city where Menelaus lives and learns more about himself. " 'How his old father and his quiet wife, Penelope, must miss him still! And Telemachus, whom he left as a new-born child,' " (Page 56, Lines 121-123).
- This book starts with Odysseus in the house of the goddess, Calypse. Calypse is guided to finally release Odysseus after ten years. " 'Now the command is: send him back to haste' " (Page 56, Lines 121-123).
