"What have I done to offend you? Did I not just give you the very thing you asked for?" (132).
It's America's first day at the palace in "The Selection" In this book, its a companion to the series "The Selection" and tells this part of the story in Prince Maxon's point of view. America gets frustrated and scared and went outside to the gardens, guards ran after her but Maxon tells them off, but he approaches America. She is the first contestant in The Selection that he's met.
This competition, it's too much. I'm a 5, I'm not meant for this.
But hey, why are you so upset?
What do I do?!? I feel so awkward around crying women
After Maxon approaches America, he calls her "dear". America is not happy about this statement and thinks she is being stereotyped. She was not afraid to talk back to the prince after just meeting him.
Ok...
America, this is my first time meeting any of the contestants. I can assure you that cast has nothing to do with my emotions. I am going to meet everyone tomorrow and I have to go but we will talk later I will try my best to find you. Ok ?
I'm going to head inside, stay out here as long as you like there is a guard waiting inside for you.
Maxon is confused on why America was snapping back, he has never experienced this in his life. He simply tried to detect what was wrong but American came to her senses are realized that she was in the wrong. America was now scared that she would be kicked out of the competition, but Maxon seemed very understanding.
Maybe this isn't so bad...
In this society, there is a casting system based on wealth. One is loyalty and the scale goes down all the way to eight. The Selection candidates are usually spread from two to four, and occasional fives. America thinks she's not good enough and the competition is stupid because it objectifies girls and is kind of based on casts.
Maxon reassures America after she shared her emotions. He tells America not to worry about her cast, it's his choice at the end of the day. Cast means nothing too Maxon but he knew it mattered to his father. He left that detail out because he knows he has the support from his mother because she was a four. Maxon knows America is overwhelmed, so he eventually wanted to leave America to think about this herself.
America feels better about herself and the competition after Maxon talks to her. She felt stupid by how she talked to the prince and feared that he would kick her out. Still, she knew that to keep this encounter a secret instead of bragging to the other girls. She needed some fresh air and alone time to collect herself, and she returned inside to her room shortly after Maxon left.
