The theme I chose was trauma. The very first time that Papa had a violent outburst is a good demonstration of what character he is in the story, and his actions that affect others. For example, Kambili and Jaja use their eyes to communicate. Using silence is a form of trauma, as they don't want to trigger Papa's wrath.

Kambili was on her period and was having cramps. Mama urged her to eat cereal before mass, but had to eat quickly before Papa got back inside. He got back and caught Kambili eating 10 minutes before mass. He whiped everyone to punish them. Papa's violent outbursts convey that love is earned. If they obey him then they'd avoid his violent outbursts.

Amaka finds Kambili to be snobbish, pretentious, and privileged like the other kids at school. Kambili wanted to speak out, but due to her being so used to being silent, she does not. Kambili is used to being conditioned to be obedient, while Amaka is used to being loud, opinionated, and can use her voice.
