  • woah! i wonder how far away my kite is...?
  • The kite is 20 meters off the ground, and im holding the spool of string 5 meters off the ground.  the angle of elevation is 62 degrees.  solve the triangle.
  • to find side "a" you take 20 subtract 5 from that and have 15 left for side "a".

  • katie loves math and learned a new concept so she wants to find out how far away her kite is from her.
  • now to find another side, we need to take the sin 62= opposite / hypotenuse.  sin 62= 15 / x.  sin 62X= 15 X = (15)/(sin 62) X=17
  • katie knows a few things that will help her solve for the triangle to find out how far away her kite is. she needs to find out at least 2 sides or a side and an angle. in this she knows a side and an angle.
  • now katie starts to fill in her triangle so she knows what EXACTLY she needs to find, and which formula to choose.
  • Now  we need to use the pythagorean therom to solve for the last side.  a^2 = b^2 + c^2 now plug in 17 for "A" 15 for "b" and x for "c" 17^2= 15^2 + x^2 289 = 225 + x^2 289-225=x^2 64=x^2 square root of 64 = x^2 8=x. WOW! my kites 8 meters away from me !  
  • katie remembers SOHCAHTOA from class so she determined that she needed to use SOH which is sin. she has an opposite angle and a hypotenuse that she needs to find. 
  • katie then does the work out to find that the hypotenuse is 17 meters long. But thats not the information katie is looking for. she wants to know how far away the kite is from where shes standing. 
  • finally katie finds what shes looking for. katie finds out that the kite is only 8 meters away from her by figuring out that the last side is 8, which she found from using the pythagorean formula.
