I'm so glad I finally have enough money for these dogs!
Billy has fallen into the trap of puppy love and desperately wants two coon hounds. While walking one day Billy sees a magazine with an ad about hounds for sale. This urged Billy to work for the money. Billy goes around selling to the fishermen and doing chores for his grandpa. Billy finally has enough money and gets his dogs.

Billy's dogs try for weeks to catch their first coon when finally the chance comes. Billy cuts down the tree and skins the coon. From then on, Billy promised to do the rest of the work when the hounds tree the coons.

Billy and his grandfather make a bet with the Pritchard boys that Old Dan and Little Ann can tree the "ghost coon." Billy's dogs tee the coon. When Billy refuses to kill the ghost coon, Ruben beats him up. This causes Dan and Ann to attack Ruben's dog. When Ruben tries to attack the dogs with his axe, he trips on it and kills himself.

Billy's grandpa enters Billy in a coon-hunting contest. Billy, his grandfather, and his father go in a buggy. Little Ann wins the beauty contest, and they qualify for the championship. During the hunt, a blizzard hits and the dogs are lost. Finally, they find the dogs. After they skin the first coon, Billy wraps it around grandpas ankle to make it feel better. They have just enough coons to win the contest.

While on a hunt, the dogs tree a mountain lion. The mountain lion attacks, and Billy runs in to save the dogs, only to end up having to be saved himself. Old Dan is badly wounded and he dies, shortly afterwards Little Ann dies of after refusing to eat for days.

A while after the dogs die, the family moves to town using the money Billy won at the contest. He visits the dog's grave for the last time and finds a red fern growing on top of it. According to the legend, only angels can plant red ferns. After discovering it, Billy finally moves on and feels ready to move to town.
