One day my manager asked me what I wanted to do as a career. This was a question I asked myself daily. The previous times I had gone to school I never took it serious, because I wasn't passionate about something.
After talking to a few friends and family, I decided to submit an application at any entry jobs for UNM Hospitals. After going through interview, after interview I got hired! I didn't know what I wanted to do within the healthcare system, all I knew is I loved helping people.
My first few days in my new role, I met a patient who because of HIPAA laws I'll nickname John. John was a frequent patient. He soon became one of my regulars, he would ask for me every time he went and always wanted me to do his intake. As time went on John became very ill.
Soon his visits became more regular. After he got so ill his family members started to drive him to his appointments. Then I got a message, our case worker informed us that he had been admitted to the main hospital and had passed away. John was a special person, he always had a smile on his face and saw the good in every person.
His provider and I talked about how much we would miss his dad jokes, and how he remembered small details of everyone. John became the patient that impacted me to become a physicians assistant. I want to be a small part in the healing process for all people but especially for the John's of this world.
