  • Not every one has access to clean water, some people have to walk great distances to get water that isn't even clean.
  • That is one of the most horrible things in this world !
  • Today we learned about how not every one has access to clean water.
  • I know, I have to do something about it
  • When he was 6 he found out that not everyone had clean water
  • He comes home and tells his parents.
  • Chores help him reach his goal of $70.
  • He raises $2000 doing lots of different chores.
  • He sends the money to WaterCan, who builds the first well in northern Uganda.
  • He is featured on the Oprah Winfrey show and gets wide publicity and donations.
  • The Canadian International Development Agency matches $2 for every dollar Hreljac raises. He is 10 years old.
  • Hrejlac founds Ryans Well Foundation in 2001 to build wells and sanitation in Africa and raise awareness about water and sanitation. Ryan's Well encourages you to conserve water in your community and to inspire your friends, family and neighbors to do the same.
  • This is how a well works. It is a hole in the ground surrounded by metal and mesh around the metal. Moisture seeps in through the mesh. A plunger then forces the water up.
  • Before the wells some people had to walk 12 miles each way to get get water. The water they were getting was infested with disease and parasites. At any given time half of the worlds hospital beds are filled with people suffering from a water based disease.
  • In 2009 there were 300 million people in Africa that didn't have water. In 2013 there were more than 1 billion people without clean water around the globe.
  • It costs between $8 (for a rain collection system) to $12,000 to build a well in Uganda. A deep well can cost $15,000 or more.
  • "All I had to do was take 10 steps from the classroom to get get to the drinking fountain and I had clean water. Before that day in school I figured everyone lived like me. When I found out that wasn't the case I decided I had to do something about it. "
  • The Hreljac family adopted a young African child in need named Jimmy. He was pen pals with Ryan during the Ugandan civil war. He was raised by his aunt, abducted by a rebl group and then escaped to the home of an aid worked. The Hreljac's paid for his schooling and he moved to Canada and became an Canadian citizen.
  • Ryan's Well Foundation builds wells in East Africa, West Africa and Central South Africa. They don't allow volunteers or groups to build wells.
  • A movie was made about Ryan's first well called "Ryan's well" in 2001. "A Return to Ryan's Well" was made in 2015. A book was also written about him and his brother, Jimmy.
