I am Henri Phillipe, I am a French shoemaker in Paris.
Citizens in our town have been going through some tough, and fearful times. This is what we call the Reign of Terror, caused by the evil tyrant Maximilien Robespierre.
The guillotine, invented by Dr. Joseph Guillotine, was the engine of the Reign of Terror. It had a fast falling blade, that extinguished life in a blink of an eye. It was thought to be the more humane way of execution, but it quickly became a symbol of fear.
Maximilien Robespierre was a highly intelligent, but treacherous man. He was a highly feared leader, and unfortunately, he used that fear to fuel and corrupt him during the Reign of Terror. While on his power trip, he was responsible for approximately 300,000 arrests and thousands of deaths.
When Robespierre was finally executed in 1794, there was relief that filled the entire land of France.
After the Reign of Terror, the third stage of the French Revolution, a new phase began. There was a new rule, a new constitution, and more feeling of pride in one's country, also known as nationalism. Nationalism became significant to France. It will eventually become a blessing and a curse to France and it’s future leaders.
