  • Simile (Page 310, paragraph 11)
  • ’There was a long tumultuous shouting sound like the voice of a thousand waters’
  • The crack symbolizers the Usher family, Usher and his sister and why they are separated by death the crack is what isolates the existing home after they die. This is the conclusion of the tragic story of the late House of Usher.
  • Symbolism (Page 15, Paragraph 5)
  • 'Perceptible fissure which, extending from the roof of the building in the front. Made its way down the wall in a zigzag direction’
  • This sets the mood and overall tone for the story because he  describes the setting and the quality of the location. It demonstrates how strange, mysterious and creepy the atmosphere is around the House of Usher.
  • Imagery (Page 87, Paragraph 3)
  • ‘’Upon the bleak walls, upon the vacant eyelike windows, upon a few rank sedges, and upon a few white trunks of decayed trees.” 
  • This shows that Usher accepts his fate. It is beneficial to the text because he finally understand and accepts what is going on and going to happen. Now he fears his own house and he informs the narrator that he is afraid and nervous.
  • Foreshadowing (Page 19, Paragraph 11)
  • ‘’I shall perish; said he; I must perish this deplorable folly’’
  • Alliteration (Page 110, Paragraph 9)
  • This repetition of the beginning sounds of words next to each other are like tongue twisters and it emphasizes the theme of loneliness and depression throughout the story. 
  • “During the whole dull, dark soundless day in the autumn of the year, i had been passing alone on a dreary tract land”
  • This is a very impactful line. It shows the immense impact Madeline’s death had on him. As a result of Madeline’s death he is in a way mentally dead. This contributes to theme of sadness that the story has. 
  • Hyperbole (Page 305, Paragraph 7)
  • ‘’white trunks of decayed trees turn his heart to ice''
