- Exposition -we meet Mathilde and we learn that she is really unhappy with her middle-class life and wants to be rich like her friends
- I'm so poor why can't I be rich like all my friends
- Conflict Introduced- mathilde and her husband are invited to a ball but mathilde doesn't want to go because she has nothing to wear
- I can't go I have nothing to wear

- why don't you ask mme. Forest you to are close enough to ask that of her
- mme. Forest gives her a necklace and her husband buys her a dress for 400 franks then they go to the ball

- Falling Action- The husband goes out to look for the necklace later that night but comes up with nothing and they end up having to ask to borrow money to buy a new one and have to fire the servant and down grade to a old apartment fast forward 10 years they pay everything off including the interest

- Resolution- Mathilde finds out the necklace she wore to the ball was a fake and only was 500 franks
