  • Selecting Physical Activities
  • In order to be fit and healthy, you need to engage in some type of recreational program. It is recommended that young adults perform 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity everyday. The key to developing a successful personal activity program is to find recreational activities that you enjoy and that are appropriate for your health and fitness level.
  • Health conditions and physical disabilities may limit the type of activities and how vigorously you can participate in those activities. For example, if you are just starting an exercise program, you may not want to start out jogging right away, as it may put too much strain on your legs or feet, particularly if you are obese.
  • Personality and AttitudeWe are each unique individuals, which means that there is not one activity that will meet everyone's needs When determining the recreational activities you will participate in, it is important to consider whether you prefer a team or individual activity and if you would rather have a casual or competitive environment.
  • Reason For ParticipationThe reason you are participating in a particular activity can influence your choice of activity.
  • Environmental ConsiderationsWhen choosing an activity to participate in, the temperature, humidity, air pollution, and traffic can affect your choice. When choosing an activity, personal safety should always be a primary concern. For example, if you live in an area with a great deal of traffic, jogging around your neighborhood may not be a good choice of activity.
  • Other ConsiderationsWhen deciding on an activity you will participate in, you should consider how much the activity will cost. Many activities, such as jogging and hiking, require little or no cost. The availability of facilities is also a consideration. For example, you may really love swimming, but if you do not have access to a pool, you may need to choose another activity. Many communities offer free or inexpensive recreational facilities.
