After Edwards declared Chichester Chaplin the mayor, Samuel Norris'(the other candidate for mayor) supporters went to Jose Antonio Sauceudo, a Mexican official, who declared Norris the winner instead. Even though He was unable to accept Sauceudo's decision, Edwards left the colony with his brother, Benjamin, in charge

As troubles in the colony continued, Edwards's brother sent several angry letters to the Mexican Officials. Due to Benjmin's arrogance, the Mexican government decided to revoke Edward's land grant, which greatly angered the emprasario.

after declaring their independence from Mexico, a spark between the Texans and the Mexican government started a short-lived revolt. Then, in November, a group of people seized Edwards, Norris and some others and charged him with crimes, eventually replacing Norris with a new mayor. Because the rebels had no right to do this, the Mexican government sent troops to Nacogdoches.

To combat against the Mexicans, Benjamin enlisted Richard Fields and a small band of followers proclaimed a new independent state: the Republic of Fredonia. After raising a red and white flag and signing a declaration of independence, the group was ready to defend themselves in a building called Old Stone Fort. They sent Stephen F. Austin a plea for troops, but instead Stephen declined and supported the Mexicans. Afetr the soldiers reached Nacogdoches, the Fredonian rebellion collapsed, with most of the group fleeing into the U.S., but some captured by Mexico.
