Storyboard Text

  • "Still harping on my daughter"
  • [aside]. "How say you by that? Still harping on my daughter. " (2.2.188)
  • "What do you read, my lord?" (2.2.193)
  • "Words, words, words." (2.2.194)
  • Old man with no wisdom?
  • "I mean, the matter that you read, my lord." (2.2.197)
  • "Slanders, sir. For the satirical rogue says here that old men have gray beards... and that they have a plentiful lack of wit" (2.2.198)
  • This be madness
  • [aside]. "Though this be madness, yet there is method in ’t." (2.2.207)
  • Polonius asks himself if Hamlet is still harping, persistently talking, about his daughter Ophelia. Polonius believes Hamlet is in love with his daughter. Polonius then asks Hamlet what he is reading and Hamlet says a lot of words.
  • "Into my grave"
  • "Will you walk out of the air, my lord?" (2.2.208)
  • Polonius asks Hamlet about the words in the book he is reading and Hamlet tells him it is old men with gray beards and that they have no wisdom. Hamlet would be referring to Polonius.
  • Hamlet goes "insane"
  • (aside) "How pregnant sometimes his replies are. A happiness that often madness hits on, which reason and sanity could not so prosperously be delivered of." (2.2.210)
  • "You cannot, sir, take from me any thing that I will more willingly part withal—except my life, except my life, except my life." (2.2.217)
  • Polonius says to himself that there must be a method to Hamlet's madness. Polonius believes Hamlet is gone mad because of his love for his daughter Ophelia.
  • Plan to prove love
  • "Fare you well, my lord." (2.2.220)
  • (aside) "These tedious old fools!" (2.2.221)
  • Polonius asks Hamlet if he wants to go outside and Hamlet says into my grave, referring to death. Hamlet continues to make responses that make him look insane and Polonius believes it is for being in love.
  • "Into my grave." (2.2.209)
  • Polonius says to himself that Hamlet's responses are full of value sometimes and that his words are like those of a crazy person, no sane person could say. He then tells Hamlet he is going to take leave from him. Hamlet responds to Polonius that he won't take anything but his life and repeats himself a few times.
  • "My honorable lord, I will most humbly take my leave of you." (2.2.216)
  • Polonius says goodbye to Hamlet and Hamlet says to himself "these tedious old fools" or a boring old fool. Polonius still believes that Hamlet is madly in love and plans to have him and Ophelia meet. In actuality Hamlet's responses have only ridiculed Polonius
