- One day we were waiting outside one of the Londonparks when a dirty old cab drove up beside ours.
- I went from owner to owner severaltimes, each one poorer than the one before.
- What happened to you?
- But men are stronger than we are, and if they’re cruel and have no feelings, then there’snothing we can do about it. I wish I was dead.
- Black Beauty is that you?’
- Afew weeks after this, a cart with a dead horse in it passed by our cab stand.
- One day a poor young woman came along the street. She was carrying a child and she looked lost and worried.
- Get in the cab and I’ll takeyou for nothing.’
- She can wait. Our business is veryimportant, and anyway, we were in first, and we’ll stay in.’
- Can you tell me the way to St Thomas’s Hospitalplease?’ she asked. ‘I have to take my little boy there

- It was Ginger! But how different she looked! Her face, which was once so full of life, was now miserable and full of pain, and her breathing was very bad. She went from owner to owner several times, each one poorer than the one before.
- After leaving the woman in the hospital, Polly's old teacher appeared
- HOSPITAL

- On the way to the station they talked about life and then she gave him some money for the children

- The men left at one after Jerry already had a cough
- Two days passed, Harry and Dolly received Mr. Grant and told him that Jerry was feeling better
- He feels much better
- ‘Thank God!’ He was a kind man, and did a lot to help the family during this time, because while Jerry was ill, he was earning no money, and we all had to eat.
