I'm sending you to Kansas. This can't continue. You're putting me in danger.
Assistance/Mentor
Alright class, we're gonna learn the only important thing you'll ever learn at this school.
Departure
Holland Braddley's Call to Adventure is when her twin brother Keefe dies in a plane crash. Weird things have been happening to her ever since, things she thinks are fueled by her grief and anger. She breaks things without touching then. She makes things shatter when she's especially upset. And she even cause people to be in pain to match her own. Her mother gets so fed up and upset with this that she sends Holland to a boarding school in the middle of Kansas, which is really more an asylum for children.
Trials
Holland is scared and confused by the time she gets to the boarding school. She doesn't understand what's happening to her. Cleo, her roommate, tells her that they are all Broken because of traumatic experiences. They were all sent to the boarding school to be protected from the Immortals, the Supreme Beings that controlled the Universe, because the Immortals could no longer control them due to that trauma. Cleo says the Immortals would kill them because they want to be in control and the Brokens mess it up . The boarding school has a teacher named Dr. Starle. He teaches the children how to hide their Breaks so that Immortals can't find them. He quickly becomes Holland's favourite, and is the mentor archetype.
Crisis
During the last class, an Immortal called It attacks the school. It kills Dr.Starle and the rest of the teachers and takes the students captive.Holland manages to escape theIt, along with a girl named Mallory and aboy named Quoi. They aren't able to free anyone else, and they run. Dr. Starle told them before he died that The three companions must split and the lies have to be revealed. They must look deep within to see the truth. The four must be found, or the world will end and It will triumph.
Resolution
They have a long road of trials, which all begin with Holland, Quoi and Mallory, the ones who escaped the It running away and trying to figure out what the heck the prophecy means and how to rescue their friends who are still trapped. They think they probably need to solve the prophecy to save them. Mallory thinks the four must be found part is referring to the ancient elemental sticks that went missing centuries ago. They assume the three companions must split refers to the three of them, so they split up into the forest. Mallory goes East, Quoi goes South, and Holland goes West. The North is where they came from, so obviously they can't go back there. They all go through different adventures to find the sticks, but they ultimately only regroup with three out of the four.
The crisis is when Holland, Mallory, and Quoi return to the Immortal's palace where the It had taken them captive. They know they have to put the sticks on the Immortal's thrones so that the It doesn't end the world like the prophecy said. But theIt finds them!!! It takes them back to its palace and tries to take them captive again! But Cleo, Holland's roommate, manages to escape her bounds. She frees a few other Brokens before being choked to death by the It. The other freed Brokens free Mallory, Holland, and Quoi, who sneak away to the throne room. The It follows them.
This is the resolution/ ending (of this book). Holland, Mallory, and Quoi race to the Immortal's thrones in Its palace, and place all one stick on one arm of each throne. The It dies, and the dead Brokens come back as ghosts to speak to them. Holland finally feels at home and mastered her Brokenness. They dance on the body of the Itand take off Its mask and hood to reveal It's identity. It's Holland's twin brother, Keefe.
